Ration Card

Ration card is an official document that is used to purchase food grains at subsidised rate from stores under the Public Distribution System. Apart from the above primary function the card also serves as an identity document. Respective State/ UT Governments issues Ration Cards to households of India under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

Types of Ration cards

Priority Household (PHH) ration cards: PHH Card holders are eligible for 5 kg of food grains per member monthly.

Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration cards: AAY Cards are issued to “poorest of poor” households. AAY Card holders are eligible for 35 kg of food grains per month.

One Nation, One Ration Card

One nation- one ration card is a scheme to ensure food security for all. The scheme also includes internal migrants within India, who can purchase subsidised food from any PD Store across India. For instance, a worker from Orissa employed at Kerala could obtain his share of food in Kerala, while his family can obtain their share in Orissa.

PDS with Respect to Kerala

In Kerala the Civil Supplies Department functions under the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, which is headed with the responsibilities of Public Distribution, which includes the enforcement, promotion, protection, regulation, etc. of activities related to the system.

The Kerala Rationing Order 1966, PDS (Regulation) Order, 2001 issued by the Government of Kerala and other regulatory orders under the Essential Commodities Act explain the course of action.
