Product Certification

Indian Standards Institution (ISI) was established under the BIS Act 2016 as a Registered Society. Being the National standards authority of India, the organization had a clear mandate of preparing and promoting Standards, Eventually for improving the services to consumers.

ISI Marking

The Certification Marks by Indian Standards Institution was started under the Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act, 1952. The marking was officially launched in 1955 & is popularly known as the ISI Marking Scheme.

ISI Mark to a product is issued after examining the potentials of the manufacturer as well as ensuring quality of the product towards the requirements of the relevant Indian Standards.

The Scheme basically is voluntary in nature. On the other hand the Govt. of India on different deliberations like public-interest, health issues on beings -human, animal or plant, regarding environment safety, etc. has informed various products for compulsory registration to Indian Standards through Quality Control Orders (QCOs).

The presence of BIS Standard Mark on a product confirms the assurance of the product to the requirements of Indian Standards. The Schemes of BIS enhances the confidence of consumers about the quality, safety & reliability of products.

Compulsory Registration

A person shall manufacture or store for sale, import, sell or distribute goods that are notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) or Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) only after obtaining compulsory registration.

A license to use BIS Standard Mark with a unique registration number will be allotted to the entities upon registration.

Hallmarking

Hallmarking is the method used to determine the content of precious metal in precious-metal products. Hallmarks are considered as an official mark used as a guarantee of purity or fineness of precious metal products. Thus objectives of the scheme are to safeguard the consumers from adulteration and to constrain manufacturers to stick to the Indian standards. In India, Hallmarking is applicable to the precious metals namely gold & silver.

Systems Certification

BIS has been operating Management Systems Certification Scheme (MSCS) since 1991.At First BIS started the scheme with Quality Management System Certification (IS/ISO 9001) and over the years it has expanded its activities to various other Management Systems. Management Systems Certification Scheme is a third party certification issued to Management system of an organization to demonstrate its capability to meet the requirements of a management system standard.

Foreign Manufacturers Certificate

FMCS is a scheme through which BIS grants license to a foreign manufacturer in accordance with the Act. The licence is granted for the products which satisfies Indian Standards. Mandatory or voluntary certification will be issued appropriately.

Laboratory Services

BIS operates various conformity assessment schemes to safeguard consumer’s interest. BIS provides licenses or registrations to manufacturers who are capable of producing goods that satisfy relevant Indian Standards. BIS has established the laboratory services for the testing of products on a regular basis for ensuring the conformity towards Indian Standards.
