An overview of Kendriya Vidyalayas

Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) are a system of central government schools in India that were established under the aegis of the Ministry of Education (formerly Ministry of Human Resource Development). They were originally founded to cater to the educational needs of the children of transferable Central Government employees, including defense and paramilitary personnel, by providing a common program of education. Over time, they have become some of the most sought-after schools in the country due to their quality education and affordable fee structure.

These are some key features of Kendriya Vidyalayas:

  1. Uniform Curriculum: All KVs follow a uniform curriculum prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is designed to be student-friendly and to promote a holistic education.
  2. Affiliation: They are affiliated with the CBSE and prepare students for the All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE) (Class X) and the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) (Class XII).
  3. Admission: Admissions are primarily reserved for the children of central government employees, with a certain percentage of seats allocated for children from the SC/ST communities, economically weaker sections, and other categories as per government norms.
  4. Language Policy: The three-language formula is followed, which includes Hindi, English, and the regional language of the area where the KV is located.
  5. Infrastructure: KVs generally have good infrastructure, including well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and sports facilities.
  6. Co-educational: Most KVs are co-educational and offer education from Class I to Class XII.
  7. Quality of Education: KVs are known for their quality of education and have consistently produced good results in board examinations.
  8. Extracurricular Activities: Emphasis is given to extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and cultural events, to ensure the all-round development of students.
  9. Teachers: Teachers in KVs are central government employees and are usually well-qualified and experienced.
  10. Expansion: The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) is the governing body that oversees the functioning of these schools. The KVS has been expanding the number of schools to meet the growing demand.

Kendriya Vidyalayas have played a significant role in the Indian education system by providing quality education to a diverse student population and have contributed to the promotion of national integration due to their pan-Indian presence.

The list of Kendriya Vidyalayas:

There are 1,256 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) spread across India and abroad. These schools are managed by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. KVs are located in almost every state and union territory in India, as well as in a few foreign countries to cater to the educational needs of children of Indian diplomats and other government employees posted overseas.
